DAY 1 ~WELCOME TO MEXICO! SPORT CLIMBING AND THE ART OF FLUID MOTION.

La PEÑA DE BERNAL, Queretaro Mexico

La Peña de Bernal~ The World’s tallest freestanding Monolith.

Day~1

Sport Climbing from the ground up.

Our first day is spent assessing your goals, getting to know one another, climbing great routes while learning lots of skills needed every time you rope-up. We hit the ground running and set the tone for our stellar days to come. No one knows too little* to join us or too much. Everyone gains perspective and knowledge from the moment we arrive at the cliff.

Our professional guides will begin the day by discussing the foundations of climbing and what it is to have a strong and solid partnership between the climber and belayer. Within this discussion the group as a whole will consider their individual strengths vs. (perceived) weaknesses and discuss what everyone is looking to accomplish throughout their time spent with us.

This clinic will be taught at La Peña de Bernal. Rising to almost 1,700 feet in height, La Peña is the world’s tallest monolith as well as a world class climbing destination. This magnificent climbing area and beautiful town is conveniently located 25 minutes East of the Intercontinental Airport of Queretaro.

Join us for a thrilling adventure in Central Mexico, exploring three magnificent climbing areas. Gain invaluable education to enhance your existing skills and fill any gaps in your climbing expertise. Remember, learning is a lifelong journey - even the most experienced climbers continue to acquire new skills. We are sure to make every day count towards your progress in the world of climbing!

The climbing is incredible, the skills you will learn are imperative. Experience three completely different climbing areas, different rock, different ecosystems and completely climbing styles. No other climbing retreat on the entire Northern Continent offers such (actually not any climbing clinic anywhere that we know of in the entire world).

*above we mentioned “ No one knows too little* to join us [or too much]. Everyone gains perspective and knowledge from the moment we arrive at the cliff.” This retreat is not for complete beginners. We want the group to have cohesion. We will ask questions before money changes hands to make sure expectations are met from the climber’s perspective. We want everyone to have an incredible experience.

We invite climbers of all ability levels to join us. Our guides will be teaching skills for anyone attending from 5.fun right into 5.hard. You will get stronger and gain invaluable knowledge all the while having a magnificent experience.

During our first day together a deep focus will be placed on the technique differences between traditional and sport climbing. From the ground to clipping the anchors climbers will fine tune the skills required to proficiently sport climb outdoors. We will have skill building exercises for the gym transition as well as for experienced climbers. This retreat is a wealth of learning for all grade climbers.

We will cover~

  • On-sighting tactics

  • Climbing efficiently and fluid movement

  • Overcoming the mindset of thinking about only the fall vs. thinking about the climbing

  • Falling and why it’s never failing

  • Building the best anchor-point on bolts and stripping the anchor safely and efficiently (day 1 & 3)

  • 99% of past participants are leading sport climbs by days-end

This is a day that will resonate throughout your entire climbing career as you will “own” these valuable skills.

*Whether you top-rope, mock lead or full on lead climb; everyone will feel complete and total inclusion within the group. You will learn from professional guides while feeling the strength and security from one another’s accomplishments. Guaranteed!

DAY 2~ CRACK CLIMBINg. The technique, the beauty of the features, going from zero to hero.

LA CONCEPCIÓN, ACULCO

La Concepcion; the Indian creek of Mexico

The Indian Creek of Mexico

La Concepcion; The best crack climbing in the entirety of mexico.

We will cover~

  • Ground school and how to be the best partner at the crag.

  • Hand jams and filling the void. How crack climbing is naturally beautiful.

  • Crack climbing efficiently and fluid movement from the hips.

  • Overcoming the mindset of thinking about only the falling. Climb until you fall/not giving up.

  • Building top rope anchors off natural features (not mandatory) and understanding redundancy.

  • Understanding traditional gear/mock leading/trad leading on set protection

Marionetas Nocturnas. Possibly the finest 32 meter moderate on the entire Northern Continent.

Out of all the different styles of climbing “crack” seems to be the most ominous for all climbers. It all comes from the fear of what could happen with body parts cammed in constrictions if you fall. What our day together will focus on is dispelling any myths surrounding climbing fissures while teaching proper techniques to succeed. Understanding how to properly hand jam, arm bar and body compress to move the feet up are critical techniques to understand and master for anyone thinking about traveling to traditional areas to climb. We will teach from the ground how to read routes that look anything but easy.

La Concepcion is most likely one of the best (unknown) crack climbing areas on the Northern Continent. The rhyolite is super kind on the hands and the feet are only in the cracks 10% of the time. The rock forces technique and indomitable will not to fall off. Every route in the canyon from the ground to the lip of the cliff are “four star” classic climbs. Every climb is completely different from the route next to it. One long day of climbing at La Concepcion will make you a believer.

This could be the most gratifying day of climbing in your entire career to date.

DAY 3~ A REST[ING] REST DAY IN ACULCO.

Sunset in Aculco,

Climbing is not just physically demanding. it takes a toll on your mental state as well. While attending our retreat you will be pushing your limits, dealing with fear, and making split-second decisions which lead to mental fatigue. Rest days provide the mental reprieve needed to recharge your focus and motivation. After a nice rest day of relaxing and eating you will be sure to return with renewed enthusiasm and a clearer mindset, ultimately improving your climbing performance.

Aculco de Espinoza, granted the Pueblos Mágico designation in 2015, boasts a rich history dating back to 110 AD when it was settled by the Otomí people. Conquered by the Mexicas in the 14th century, the town was 'founded' by the Spanish in the 1500s, with a church built off the main square. Miguel Hidalgo sought refuge in the adjoining convent during his revolution against the Spanish, adding historical significance. With its stunning beauty and diverse attractions, Aculco offers a captivating blend of culture and history.

#PueblosMágicos #AculcoDeEspinoza

Your rest day will include a delicious breakfast to get the day going then a personal walking tour of the town.

Rest days are for resting. Enjoy it.

DAY 4~ FIGHT THE PUMP; CLIMBING SMART ON STEEP TERRAIN.

LAS PEÑAS DE DEXCANI, JILOTEPEC

Climbing at Las Peñas de Dexcani with SouthernXposure Guides

This day of climbing and learning will be at Las Peñas de Dexcani located in a private woodland preserve just outside the town of Jilotepec de Molina.

Climber’s will fortify their skills acquired by using the knowledge gained over the past few days of clinics. The goal? Feel comfortable and succeed in a new environment that forces differing techniques and energy conservation. You will be route finding while the pump clock is ticking.

This is a full day of climbing and learning. We as a cohesive group will focus more attention on making sure all the necessary building blocks of success have been retained for this day and moving into the future. Learning the techniques needed specific to sport climbing on steep terrain pays dividends for anyone looking forward to travel-climbing from our day together into the future. The walls of Las Peñas de Dexcani are truly a magical outdoor classroom.

We teach lessons and skills to propel one's entire mindset towards proficiency and self sufficiency.

Joltepec with SouthernXposure Guides

Las Peñas de Dexcani is volcanic tuff like nothing seen in the United States. A climbers paradise.

We will cover~

  • From the ground on-sighting tactics.

  • Climbing efficiently when the angle increases and fluid movement with limited options.

  • Revisiting overcoming the mindset of thinking about only the fall vs. thinking about the climbing.

  • Falling and why it’s never failing.

  • Stripping the anchor safely and efficiently (with a final exam).

  • 99% of past participants are leading sport climbs in Las Peñas by days’ end.

DAY 5~ ANOTHER RESTING REST DAY IN ACULCO.

Another rest day will be needed as we’ve done so much and your mind and muscles will be majorly fatigued. This day will be about relaxing and touring the pueblo. Aculco is a very beautiful town that invites people to hang out and enjoy the scenery. From the many tourist shops to the crazy amount of cheese shops to the historical sites, there is so much to see and do. One more day of getting to know the culture here in Central Mexico will warm your heart.

Join us after your relaxing rest day for a book hosted by Hans Florine. He will be sharing his incredible accomplishments throughout the years. As a special treat, all attendees will receive a complimentary copy of the best-selling book "On the Nose" as a token of our appreciation. Don't miss this exclusive event to celebrate Hans' successes and enjoy a captivating discussion. Secure your spot now and be part of the ‘Triple Crown’ experience!

DAY 6~ Return to La Concepcion for another amazing day of climbing

THE 4TH DAY OF CLIMBING! AN ADDED DAY AT THE crack CRAG.

We will be doing an additional day at La Concepcion outside of Aculco for the last day of our time together. This day is for everyone who desires another day out at the cliffs to close any crack projects from our first visit. What we have seen time and time again is anyone visiting wishes they could spend more time building strength and technique climbing the cracks of La Concepcion. We will set up top-ropes all day on classic routes from easy to difficult to get everyone another day to knock down classic climbs. This is the ultimate added day. The four star pitches never end and this day will afford everyone another opportunity to climb harder and really dial in a technique that will pay dividends throughout your climbing career. You will surely have an experience of a lifetime dialing in your crack technique.

SIMEON HEIMOWITZ

OWNER OF SOUTHERNX, PCGI CERTIFIED ROCK CLIMBING INSTRUCTOR, LICENSED ROCK GUIDE, SAG PROFESSIONAL STUNT MAN, WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER, PROLIFIC DEVELOPER, AND ALL AROUND SWELL HUMAN BEING!

Simeon is the owner and operator of SouthernXposure Climbing School based out of Aculco de Espinoza, Mexico. He is a licensed rock climbing guide, member of the Professional Climbing Guides Institute (PCGI), Wilderness First Responder, guidebook author and started the first not for profit in Mexico to connect young adults with autism to the freedom of mind and body that only rock climbing can bring. He has been climbing since 1996 and has taught multitudes of people how to climb and stay safe in the vertical world for the better part of twenty years. Simeon is active in several climbing coalitions throughout the northern continent and believes in protecting open space for the enjoyment of future generations. Simeon is also a prolific route developer and has routes with his name on them all over the northern continent. You can find these routes within the guidebooks of the Red River Gorge in Kentucky, Adirondacks in New York State, as well as Mount Charleston outside of Las Vegas in Nevada, Ralph Stover State Park in Bucks County Pennsylvania, and the New River Gorge in West Virginia. Simeon also has lots of fantastic routes in El Potrero Chico, Culo del Gato, Bernal, Aculco and Jilotepec.

Simeon learned to climb at the High Rocks Vista in Bucks County PA. While there he figured out the bolted routes were either real bad, real old or both. This started the itch to develop well protected hard routes. This itch as with other developers becomes an all out case of hives! From Stover he climbed extensively within the Delaware Water Gap recreational area before moving on to the Gunks in 1997. His desire to share the fine art of climbing systems to keep everyone safe and his love of Mexico propelled him into a life of a professional rock climbing instructor in 2005. SouthernXposure has been teaching people how to climb and guiding areas all over Mexico for almost 25 years. How time flies!!

Come and climb with SouthernXposure. See for yourself why we are the premier guide service in all of Mexico.
